Why Building Repairs at Brechin’s Bar are essential

Tags: , , , ,

When the cement render was removed at Brechin’s Bar, this revealed stone work in poor condition. Look at stones no. 30-36 circled in red in the image to the right, you can see how thin they have become due to stone erosion over time. This is why it is really important to maintain traditional buildings using traditional techniques and materials. In this instance, the application of a modern day cement render to the sandstone at Brechin’s has trapped moisture in the sandstone and caused it to erode more quickly. As part of the repairs funded by Govan Cross THI, the cement render is being removed, the stone brush back and dressed were appropriate and then reset using lime mortar.
