Welcome to Govan Cross THI
Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative, or the THI for short, was set up in 2009 to help regenerate Govan by repairing, restoring and preserving the area’s exceptional heritage features and historic buildings. It is a grant giving initiative funded by Glasgow City Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and in 2016 a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme was also incorporated, funded by Historic Environment Scotland. The THI will invest in Govan between 2009-21 to:
- Repair and restore Govan’s important historic buildings and structures;
- Improve Govan’s shopfronts by restoring them to their traditional design;
- Enhance the appearance of Govan Cross through improvements to the public realm;
- Bring history to life, offer opportunities to learn about and promote Govan’s rich heritage, and provide training and job opportunities linked to the conservation of traditional buildings and historic environments.
Aims and Objectives
The THI aims to breathe new life into Govan by improving the physical appearance of the area and enhancing the things that make Govan special and unique.
People are attracted to and enjoy living in historic, locally distinctive and well-kept places. The investment made through the THI aims to positively impact on the economic and social success of Govan by accentuating the very best of Govan’s exceptional historic townscape and by creating a high quality urban environment that people will want to spend their time and money in. Increasing footfall, of course, leads to new opportunities for businesses, local jobs and a better quality of life for local residents.
Townscape Heritage Initiatives elsewhere in the UK have sucessfully achieved these aims – and Govan is well on its way to achieving a much vaunted renaissance that is distinctly Govan for Govan. Have a look at the postive changes so far on our projects pages – Go on, get into glorious Govan.
